Getting thereAbout 80 km west of Khmelnytskyi on the Zbruch
EntryFree; sanatoria charged

Sataniv sits on the Zbruch inside the Tovtry ridge and keeps an unusual amount for a town of its size: a sixteenth-century town gate tower still spanning the street, the ruin of a fortress synagogue of the same period with thick walls and a parapet built for defence, an old Jewish cemetery with several hundred carved headstones on the hillside, and a castle. Mineral water drawn nearby supports a set of sanatoria.

What you actually see

  • The gate tower - a sixteenth-century town gate still standing over the road.
  • The fortress synagogue - a defensible synagogue of the same period, roofless.
  • The Jewish cemetery - hundreds of carved headstones on the slope above the town.
  • The mineral water - the springs the local sanatoria are built on.

When to go

April to October is the comfortable season. The cemetery is best in the morning light. Sanatoria operate year round.

Honest expectations

The synagogue stands roofless and unrestored, with restoration repeatedly announced and not delivered. The cemetery is overgrown in places. The town has few facilities beyond the sanatoria.

Nearby

Kamianets-Podilskyi is south, and the Tovtry ridge runs through the town.
