Kamianets-Podilskyi

Geography built Kamianets-Podilskyi's defence and its drama: the Smotrych river carves a canyon loop that wraps the old town in a near-complete stone moat, and the medieval castle - nine towers strung along a ridge - guards the single neck of land, joined to the town by a bridge over the gorge. The ensemble reads like an illustration: Polish, Armenian and Ukrainian quarters recall the trading centuries, churches and a minaret-crowned cathedral tell the border-land's layered story, and the canyon rim walks deliver the castle-over-gorge views that made the town western Ukraine's postcard. Hot-air balloons drift over it all on festival weekends in memory and in season.
