Olesko Castle

Olesko, first recorded in 1390 and about 75 kilometres from Lviv, stands on an isolated hill some fifty metres high above marshy ground, and the castle takes the shape of the summit: an oval of walls and ranges rather than the usual rectangle, with fabric from the fourteenth century onwards. It was the birthplace of Jan III Sobieski. Restored from ruin in the Soviet period, it now holds a substantial collection of painting and sculpture from the Lviv gallery, including the enormous Battle of Vienna canvas, and formal gardens run down the slope.

What to look for

• The oval plan - walls following the shape of the hilltop rather than a regular form.
• The painting collection - Lviv gallery holdings displayed through the ranges.
• The Italian garden - terraced formal gardens on the slope below the walls.
• The chapel - the Capuchin monastery church at the foot of the hill.

When to go

April to October is the comfortable season. The castle keeps museum hours and closes on Mondays. Weekends bring tour groups from Lviv.

Practical notes

Soviet-era restoration replaced a great deal and the interiors are museum spaces rather than historic rooms. Labelling is in Ukrainian. It is usually visited as one stop of three in a long day.
