Miramare Castle

Archduke Maximilian of Austria built Miramare between 1856 and 1860 on a promontory north of Trieste, and furnished it in detail, including a bedroom fitted like a ship's cabin from his years as a naval officer. He left in 1864 to become emperor of Mexico and was executed there in 1867, never returning; his wife Charlotte remained associated with the house. The interiors survive largely as furnished. The park of twenty-two hectares was laid out by Maximilian with species collected from his voyages, on ground that had been bare karst. The sea in front is a protected marine reserve.

When to go

April to October for the park; the castle is open year-round and closes some Mondays. Summer weekends are busy. The bora wind can make the promontory unpleasant.

Honest expectations

The castle is small and the visit route short. The park is exposed to wind. Marine reserve access for snorkelling is regulated and seasonal.
