Medzhybizh Fortress

The fortress at Medzhybizh stands on the spit where the Buzhok joins the Southern Buh, rebuilt in stone in the sixteenth century by the Sieniawski family into a triangle of white limestone walls with towers and a palace inside, and it is among the better preserved fortresses in Podillia. The town is separately significant as the place where the Baal Shem Tov lived and taught in the eighteenth century, making it the birthplace of Hasidic Judaism; his grave draws pilgrims.

When to go

April to October is the comfortable season. The fortress keeps museum hours and closes on Mondays. Jewish pilgrimage peaks around the anniversary of the Baal Shem Tov's death in early summer.

Honest expectations

Restoration is uneven and some ranges are empty shells. Museum labelling is in Ukrainian. The fortress and the Hasidic sites are separate visits with different audiences.
