Sezibwa Falls

Sezibwa Falls drops around seven metres over a rock face on the road between Kampala and Jinja, and although it is modest as waterfalls go, it is one of the most significant cultural sites in Buganda. Tradition holds that the Sezibwa and Bwanda rivers were born to a woman named Nakangu Tebatesa, and shrines to the spirits stand at the falls, where offerings are made. Kabaka Mwanga planted trees here in 1888 and the site is managed by the Buganda kingdom.

When to go

Year round; flow is strongest in the rainy seasons. Weekends bring visitors from Kampala. Mornings are quietest.

Things to know

The falls are small and the visit is short. It is an active ritual site and photographing ceremonies or shrines needs permission. Facilities are basic despite the entrance fee.
