Saltinho

Where the main southern road crosses the Corubal - Guinea-Bissau's great interior river - the water spreads into Saltinho: a broad staircase of rapids and low falls sliding over rock terraces, best from the old bridge that frames the whole performance. Just after the rains the river runs wall to wall in white; by late dry season it braids into channels and bathing pools between warm slabs. Fishermen work the margins with throw nets, hippos hold the calmer reaches downstream, and the spot's role as the interior's natural pause - between Bissau and the southeast's forests - comes with grilled fish at the roadside when luck and timing align.

When to go

Honest expectations

Swim only the recognised pools and only on local say-so - currents and hippos both patrol; the slabs scorch and slick by turns. Facilities are roadside-informal. As a destination it is modest; as a journey's pause it is exactly right.
