Ndere Cultural Centre

The Ndere Centre at Ntinda in Kampala was founded by Stephen Rwangyezi to keep and present the music and dance of Uganda's many peoples, and its troupe performs several evenings a week in an open-air amphitheatre: Baganda court dances, Acholi bwola, Karamojong dances, the Kiganda xylophone and the adungu harp among them. The compere explains the origins of each piece, which turns the evening into an introduction to the country's regions.

What you actually see

• The regional dances - pieces from Buganda, Acholi, Karamoja and other regions in one evening.
• The instruments - the adungu harp, the amadinda xylophone and the drums.
• The commentary - the explanation of where each dance comes from and what it means.
• The amphitheatre - the open-air stage and gardens the centre is built around.

When to go

Year round; performances run on set evenings, usually several times a week. Booking is advisable at weekends. Rain can move performances indoors.

Honest expectations

It is a staged presentation rather than a community event, which is what it sets out to be. The evening is long, three hours or more. Food service can be slow when the centre is full.
