Loyalist cotton dreams in ruins - the 1790s plantation remains standing improbably amid Providenciales' modern sprawl.

Before tourism, before salt even mattered here, Providenciales was briefly a cotton island: Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution arrived in the 1780s with enslaved workers and Crown land grants, and Cheshire Hall was among their plantations - built by the Stubbs family in the 1790s, worked hard, and abandoned within a generation when thin soils, hurricanes and the boll weevil ended the experiment. Its limestone ruins - great house walls, kitchen, cotton-press base - now stand in a pocket of bush surrounded by the modern island's traffic, kept and interpreted by the National Trust as the most accessible window into the islands' plantation chapter.

What you actually see

  • The great house walls - the standing limestone shell of the 1790s house.
  • The cotton-press base - the machinery footprint of the estate's purpose.
  • The interpretive loop - the short trail with the Loyalist-era story.
  • The bush pocket - native plants labelled along the path.

When to go

Year round; mornings dodge the heat on the shadeless loop. A guided Trust visit adds the depth the stones alone cannot carry. Half Moon Bay or Grace Bay fills the rest of the day.

Honest expectations

The ruins are modest - walls, not buildings - and the site is small; expect an hour of history, not an afternoon. The story it tells centres on enslaved labour, and the interpretation addresses this; visitors should arrive ready for that weight. Traffic hum from Leeward Highway is constant.

Nearby

Downtown Provo, Grace Bay's beach strip and the Leeward marinas.
