The Unfinished Church was begun in 1874 to replace St Peter's, which had been damaged by storm, and it was never completed: the parish split over whether to rebuild the old church instead, money ran out, a hurricane took what had been built up, and the project was abandoned. What stands is a roofless Gothic revival shell with its arcades, window tracery and tower base, stabilised by the Bermuda National Trust and open freely.

What you actually see

  • The roofless shell - the walls and arcades of an abandoned Gothic revival church.
  • The window tracery - the stone openings left standing without glass.
  • The 1874 project - the replacement for St Peter's that was never finished.
  • The hilltop position - the ruin above the town of St George.

When to go

Year round; the site is open and free. Mornings are quietest. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Honest expectations

It is a stabilised ruin with no roof and limited interpretation. Sections are fenced off where the stonework is unsafe. The visit is short.
