Repetek Biosphere Reserve

Repetek protects a stretch of the eastern Karakum where black saxaul woodland grows on sand, and a research station has operated here since 1912, making it one of the oldest desert study sites anywhere. Summer ground temperatures at Repetek are among the highest recorded in the region. UNESCO inscribed it in 2023 as one of the components of the Cold Winter Deserts of Turan, the transboundary property shared with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

When to go

April to May and September to October are the only tolerable windows. Summer conditions are genuinely dangerous. Winter nights are very cold.

Honest expectations

Permits and prior arrangement are required to enter the reserve. There are no visitor facilities beyond the station. Summer heat here can be life-threatening without preparation.
