Amul was the crossing point on the Amu Darya where the road from Bukhara met the route south to Merv, and the mounds of the walled town and its citadel survive on the edge of modern Turkmenabat. UNESCO inscribed the settlement in 2023 as one of the components of the Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor, the Silk Roads property that runs from Tajikistan through Uzbekistan and into the Karakum. Nothing on the site is reconstructed.

What you actually see

  • The town mounds - the eroded walls and citadel of the medieval settlement.
  • The river crossing - the point on the Amu Darya the town was built to control.
  • The UNESCO listing - inscription as a component of the Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor.
  • The route junction - where the Bukhara road met the way south to Merv.

When to go

April to May and September to October are the comfortable months. Summer heat is extreme. The site is open ground at all times.

Honest expectations

Nothing is reconstructed and the site reads as eroded mounds. There is no interpretation at the site. Modern Turkmenabat presses right up against it.

Nearby

Dayahatyn is northwest, and Repetek is southwest.
