El Feija National Park

El Feija covers cork oak and zeen oak forest in the Kroumirie mountains right on the Algerian border, and it exists chiefly to protect the Barbary deer, the only deer native to Africa, which was reduced to a remnant here and has been built back up in a large fenced enclosure within the park. Wild boar, jackal, genet and a long bird list share the forest, and marked trails run through the oaks.

When to go

The deer are in a fenced enclosure rather than free-ranging in the visited area. The park is on a sensitive border and permits or checks may apply. Facilities are minimal.
