Galera Point Lighthouse

Galera Point is the northeastern corner of Trinidad, where the Atlantic swell coming down the coast meets the calmer Caribbean water around the corner, and the line where they collide is visible from the headland as a churning seam offshore. A lighthouse built in 1897 stands on the point above the rocks. It is the first place in Trinidad to see the sunrise, and the rocky shore below is battered by the Atlantic constantly.

When to go

January to May is driest. Sunrise is the classic time and the reason many come. The point is windy and exposed year round.

Things to know

The lighthouse itself is not open to visitors. There is no shade and the wind is constant. Toco is a long drive from Port of Spain, three hours or more.
