Mount Matebian
One of Timor-Leste's highest mountains, a pilgrimage climb in the east with a statue of Jesus at the top.

Matebian rises to about 2,372 metres southeast of Baucau, the third highest mountain in Timor-Leste and one of the ultra-prominent peaks of the Malay Archipelago, and its name means mountain of souls: it is where the dead are held to go, and it is climbed as a pilgrimage, particularly around All Souls in early November when large numbers walk up. A statue of Jesus stands at the summit. The climb goes from Quelicai and takes most of a day each way.

When to go
May to November is the dry season and the climbing window. Early November brings the pilgrimage crowds. The rains from December make the route dangerous.

The climb is long and steep and takes most of a day each way; a guide is advisable. Accommodation is basic village arrangements. The pilgrimage is a solemn occasion.
