Lautém

Lautém, sometimes called Moro, sits on the north coast of Timor-Leste's far east, a small town that gives its name to the municipality, whose seat is Lospalos inland, with the Portuguese fort that most visitors photograph and the beaches that are its main draw. The Fataluku country runs inland from here, with its distinctive high-roofed houses. Nino Konis Santana park lies to the east.

What to look for

• The fort remains - the Portuguese work above the town.
• The beach - the shore below the settlement.
• The Fataluku country - the district running inland with its house forms.
• The name - the town the Lautém municipality is named for.

When to go

May to November is the dry season and the roads are best. The rains from December make the roads difficult. Mornings are cooler.

Things to know

There is very little in the town and facilities are basic. The road from Baucau is slow. The fort is fragmentary.

Lospalos is southeast, and Baucau is west.
