Jaco Island and the East

At the remote far eastern tip of Timor-Leste, beyond the village of Tutuala, lies Jaco Island, one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the country. This small, uninhabited island, considered sacred by local people and therefore left untouched and free of any development, is ringed by dazzling white-sand beaches and impossibly clear turquoise water teeming with coral and fish. Reached by a short crossing in a traditional outrigger canoe paddled by local fishermen from the mainland shore, it is a magical, castaway paradise at the very end of the island, unspoilt and utterly serene.

When to go

May to November, the dry season, for the best weather, calmest seas and passable roads; the far east is remote, reached by a long, rough drive, so an overnight near Tutuala allows an early crossing to the island. Out of respect for its sacred status, visitors do not stay overnight on Jaco itself.

Honest expectations

It is genuinely remote, at the far end of the country down rough roads, with only very basic accommodation near Tutuala, so reaching it is an adventure requiring time and effort; as a sacred island, it has no facilities and overnight stays on it are not permitted, in keeping with local beliefs. For the reward of a pristine, uninhabited, castaway island of dazzling beauty at the very edge of the land, though, it is unforgettable and well worth the journey.
