Lysa hora reaches 1323 metres and is the highest point of the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy, a broad flysch ridge whose top was cleared of forest long ago, which is where the name comes from - lysa means bald. It holds the Czech rainfall record: over sixteen hundred millimetres a year on average and a daily figure in 1880 that stood as the national record for over a century, because the ridge is the first substantial obstacle for moist air moving up from the south-west. It is also frequently in cloud and gets heavy snow. On top are a transmitter tower, a weather station operating since 1897 and mountain huts. Four main routes climb it, all a steady two to three hours, and it is one of the most walked mountains in the country in every season - the Beskydy have a strong hiking culture and the huts serve through the winter.

What you actually see

  • The highest Beskydy summit - 1323 metres on a broad flysch ridge.
  • The wettest place in the country - over 1,600 millimetres a year on average.
  • A weather station since 1897 - alongside the transmitter and huts on top.
  • Four walking routes - each a steady two to three hours from the valleys.

When to go

June to September; walked all year. A day.

Honest expectations

Cloud and rain are the norm rather than the exception - views are far from guaranteed. The summit is built up with masts and buildings. The road is closed to private cars. Winter needs proper equipment.

Nearby

Mionsi forest is east; Radhost and Pustevny are south-west.
