Wat Pho and the Reclining Buddha

Wat Pho is one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok, famous above all for its colossal Reclining Buddha, a serene, gold-plated figure 46 metres long depicting the Buddha entering nirvana, its feet inlaid with mother-of-pearl. A tranquil complex of glittering stupas, courtyards and Buddha images beside the Grand Palace, it is also the birthplace and a leading school of traditional Thai massage.

When to go

November to February for the coolest weather; go early to beat the heat and the crowds, and combine it with the Grand Palace next door. A modest dress code applies, so cover shoulders and knees.

What to expect

It is right beside the Grand Palace, so pairs naturally with it, but seeing both makes a hot, tiring morning. It is a working temple, so dress modestly and remove shoes in the shrine halls. It is busy, though calmer than the Grand Palace, and a massage here is a lovely way to rest.
