Suan Phueng

Suan Phueng runs west from Ratchaburi to the Myanmar border through hills that are cooler than the plain and, in the last two decades, have been comprehensively developed for domestic weekend tourism. The pattern is specific and worth understanding before going: alpine-styled resorts, sheep and alpaca petting farms, Swiss and Italian themed cafes, flower gardens, and photo installations, most of it built since the 2000s and aimed squarely at Bangkok visitors wanting cool air and pictures. It is not a wilderness. Underneath that are real things: the Pha Chor-like earth formations at Khao Chon, hot springs, the Lam Phachi river, waterfalls, and Karen villages in the border hills, some of which run community tourism. The district is busiest from November to February when the weather is cool, and resort prices rise sharply for weekends and holidays. Weekday visits find much of it quiet and some cafes closed.

When to go

November to February for the cool weather, which is the entire selling point. Weekends and holidays are crowded and expensive; weekdays are quiet with some places closed.

Honest expectations

Almost everything is a recent commercial development rather than anything traditional, and it reads that way. Weekend prices are high and accommodation books out. Animal petting farms vary a great deal in welfare standards.
