Phu Lom Lo

Phu Lom Lo sits at around 1,600 metres on the Loei and Phitsanulok border beside Phu Hin Rong Kla, and around 2010 a planting programme put roughly a hundred and twenty thousand nang phaya sua khrong - Prunus cerasoides, the wild Himalayan cherry, sometimes called the Thai sakura - across the slopes. They flower for a short window from around mid-January into early February, turning the hillsides pink above Hmong villages and cabbage terraces, and that window is the entire reason anyone comes. Outside it the mountain is a working farming ridge with a view. The bloom is weather-dependent and shifts by a week or two year to year, and a warm January can mean a poor or brief show. Access is by a steep unsealed road that ordinary cars should not attempt; local pickup transfers run from the bottom. Accommodation is camping and village homestay, and it fills completely in the flowering weeks.

What you actually see

• The cherry bloom - around 120,000 trees flowering for about three weeks in January.
• The Hmong villages - farming the same slopes below the trees.
• The ridge - about 1,600 metres, beside Phu Hin Rong Kla.
• The narrow window - nothing much to see outside the flowering.

When to go

Mid-January to early February, and only then - the bloom is the point. It shifts by a week or two each year and a warm winter can spoil it, so check local reports before committing.

Honest expectations

The flowering window is short, unpredictable and crowded. The access road needs a pickup transfer; ordinary cars do not manage it. Accommodation is basic and books out entirely in season. Outside January there is little reason to go.
