Ukerewe Island

Ukerewe is the largest island in Lake Victoria and usually named the largest lake island in Africa, about five hundred square kilometres, reached by a ferry of some three hours from Mwanza. It is farmed and fished rather than developed, with the same rounded granite boulders as the mainland, rock formations that have acquired names and stories, quiet beaches and a slow rhythm. A former palace at Bukindo and the mission at Bukongo are among the few built sights.

When to go

June to October is driest and the ferry crossings are calmest. The lake is warm year round. Ferry departures are limited and should be checked in advance.

Honest expectations

Bilharzia is present in the lake and swimming is not advisable. Accommodation is basic and choices are few. Getting around the island means motorbike taxis or long walks.
