Ukerewe Island

Ukerewe is the largest island in Lake Victoria and usually named the largest lake island in Africa, about five hundred square kilometres, reached by a ferry of some three hours from Mwanza. It is farmed and fished rather than developed, with the same rounded granite boulders as the mainland, rock formations that have acquired names and stories, quiet beaches and a slow rhythm. A former palace at Bukindo and the mission at Bukongo are among the few built sights.

Background

Ukerewe belongs to Ukerewe District in Mwanza Region and, at 530 km2, is the largest island in Lake Victoria, the largest lake island in Africa and the fifth largest lake island in the world. It lies 45 km north of Mwanza, linked to it by ferry, and a shorter crossing of 3.8 km on the other side connects with a road along the eastern shore toward Kibara and Musoma. Its shore is cut into many bays and ringed by at least a dozen smaller islands, and the largest town is Nansio. People have lived here since the 17th century, and with no tsetse fly the island supports stable herds and farms.

When to go

June to October is driest and the ferry crossings are calmest. The lake is warm year round. Ferry departures are limited and should be checked in advance.

What to expect

Bilharzia is present in the lake and swimming is not advisable. Accommodation is basic and choices are few. Getting around the island means motorbike taxis or long walks.
