Oeno Atoll

The Pitcairn group scatters wider than its famous rock: Oeno, the coral atoll to the northwest, serves as the community's traditional holiday ground - the January camping voyage that empties Adamstown for the lagoon's white islet, fishing, seabird colonies and the settlement's oldest leisure institution - while Henderson's UNESCO wilderness and Ducie's remoter ring complete the group's outliers. Visitors reach Oeno only by expedition arrangement or the community trip's occasional berth: lagoon days, tern clouds and the Pacific's least-witnessed picnics, at the group's standing remoteness terms. Families from Pitcairn have long gone out to the atoll when a boat and the weather allow it.

History

Captain James Henderson of the East India Company ship Hercules sighted the atoll in January 1819, and on 26 January 1824 Captain George Worth of the American whaler Oeno named it after his ship. The clipper Wild Wave, sailing from San Francisco, was wrecked on its reef on 5 March 1858, followed by the Khandeish in 1875, the Oregon in 1883 and the Bowdon in 1893; the United Kingdom annexed Oeno on 10 July 1902, it joined the Pitcairn Islands colony in 1938, and in 1997 its Polynesian rats were exterminated (Wikipedia, Oeno Island).
