John Adams was the last of the Bounty mutineers left alive on Pitcairn, and by the time an American ship found the island in 1808 he was running a community of women and children and had turned to teaching and religion. He died in 1829 and the settlement took his name. His is the only mutineer's grave that is marked, standing in Adamstown a short walk from the square. Adamstown itself holds the entire population of the island, a few dozen people in all.

What you actually see

  • The marked grave - the only mutineer's burial that is identified.
  • The setting - the plot standing above the settlement.
  • The Adamstown name - the village named for the man buried here.
  • The 1808 rediscovery - the visit that found the community he led.

When to go

April to October is cooler. The grave is accessible year round. Mornings are cooler for the walk up.

Honest expectations

It is a single grave and the visit takes minutes. There is little interpretation on the spot. Getting to Pitcairn at all is the difficult part; the site itself is easy.

Nearby

Adamstown is around it, and the museum is nearby.
