Mwanza is the country's second city and its main port on Lake Victoria, and its setting is unusual: the whole area is strewn with enormous granite boulders, weathered round and stacked on each other, and the city has been built among and over them. Bismarck Rock, a boulder balanced on a smaller one at the water's edge, is the local emblem. Ferries leave for Ukerewe and Bukoba, and Saanane Island sits just offshore.

Bilharzia is present in Lake Victoria and swimming from the shore is not advisable. The city is busy and hot with limited sights. Ferry timetables are unreliable.
