Mwanza

Mwanza is the country's second city and its main port on Lake Victoria, and its setting is unusual: the whole area is strewn with enormous granite boulders, weathered round and stacked on each other, and the city has been built among and over them. Bismarck Rock, a boulder balanced on a smaller one at the water's edge, is the local emblem. Ferries leave for Ukerewe and Bukoba, and Saanane Island sits just offshore.

Background

Residents call it Rock City. Mwanza dates from 1892, became an incorporated town in 1978 and a city in 2000, and is the capital of Mwanza Region, split between the districts of Ilemela and Nyamagana. The 2022 census counted 1,104,521 people in the urban area, up from 110,553 in 1978, and 3,699,872 in the region, where the Sukuma make up over 90 percent. The city lies at 1140 m, and average temperatures stay near 23.5 C all year. Fishing is a major livelihood along the shore, with five fish processing plants. Saanane Island National Park sits on a rocky island 500 metres from Capri Point, and Ndabaka Gate of the Serengeti is around 150 kilometres away by road.

Bilharzia is present in Lake Victoria and swimming from the shore is not advisable. The city is busy and hot with limited sights. Ferry timetables are unreliable.
