Mwanza is the country's second city and its main port on Lake Victoria, and its setting is unusual: the whole area is strewn with enormous granite boulders, weathered round and stacked on each other, and the city has been built among and over them. Bismarck Rock, a boulder balanced on a smaller one at the water's edge, is the local emblem. Ferries leave for Ukerewe and Bukoba, and Saanane Island sits just offshore.

What you actually see

  • Bismarck Rock - a granite boulder balanced at the harbour edge, the city's emblem.
  • The boulder landscape - rounded granite stacked across the city and shoreline.
  • The port - the ferry harbour serving the lake ports and islands.
  • The Sukuma country - the surrounding region and its cultural centre at Bujora.

When to go

June to October is the drier season. The lake is warm year round. Ferry schedules change and should be checked locally.

Honest expectations

Bilharzia is present in Lake Victoria and swimming from the shore is not advisable. The city is busy and hot with limited sights. Ferry timetables are unreliable.

Nearby

Saanane Island is offshore, and the Sukuma Museum is east.
