Ajina-Teppa

Ajina-Teppa was a Buddhist monastery of the seventh and eighth centuries in the Vakhsh valley, excavated from 1960, and it produced the object that is now the centrepiece of the National Museum: a clay reclining Buddha about thirteen metres long, broken into hundreds of fragments and reassembled over decades in Saint Petersburg and Dushanbe. What remains on site are the mudbrick foundations of the monastery and stupa court. It is a named component of the UNESCO Ancient Khuttal listing.

When to go
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. Summer here is extremely hot with no shade. Mornings are best.
Practical notes
The remains are eroded mudbrick with no shelter or interpretation. The famous Buddha is in Dushanbe, not here. The site is exposed and summer visits are punishing.
