Tigrovaya Balka Nature Reserve

Tigrovaya Balka protects the largest surviving stand of tugay, the dense riverine woodland of poplar, tamarisk and reed that once lined the rivers of Central Asia and has been cleared almost everywhere else for cotton. It was established in 1938, named for the Caspian tigers that lived here until the mid twentieth century, and holds Bukhara deer, striped hyena, jungle cat and a long bird list. UNESCO inscribed it in 2023.

When to go

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable; summer in southern Khatlon is extreme. Access requires permits arranged in advance. Mosquitoes in the floodplain are severe.

Good to know

Access requires permits and a guide and cannot be arranged on arrival. The tiger the reserve is named for has been gone for decades. Summer heat here regularly exceeds forty-five degrees.

Nearby

Kulob is northeast, and the Vakhsh runs through the reserve.
