Hulbuk Fortress

Hulbuk was the capital of the medieval principality of Khuttal, occupied from around the ninth to the twelfth centuries, and excavation found a palace with carved plaster decoration, glazed tiles, a bath house and a water supply of some sophistication. A full-scale reconstruction has been raised over part of the site, which is contested among archaeologists but makes the layout legible. Kalai Hulbuk and the surrounding settlement are named components of the UNESCO listing inscribed in 2025.

When to go

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable. Summer in Khatlon is extremely hot with no shade. The museum keeps limited hours.

Things to know

The reconstruction is modern and disputed; very little original fabric is visible above ground. Interpretation is largely in Tajik. Summer heat here is punishing.
