Qalaat Najm

Qalaat Najm sits on a bluff directly above the Euphrates east of Manbij, a castle rebuilt by the Ayyubids in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries on a much older crossing point, and restored well enough in recent decades that its interiors read clearly: a palace with a courtyard and baths, vaulted halls, and a glacis of smooth stone falling to the river. The crossing it guarded carried traffic between Aleppo and the Jazira for centuries.

What you actually see

• The glacis - the smooth stone armouring of the mound.
• The palace rooms - courtyard, iwans and baths inside the castle.
• The vaulted halls - the covered spaces within the walls.
• The Euphrates below - the river crossing the castle watched.

When to go

March to May and October to November are mild. Summer is hot on the exposed bluff. Late light on the river is the best of it.

Honest expectations

Access depends on current local arrangements and has changed over the years. There are no facilities at the site. Parts of the interior are dark and need a torch.
