Qalaat Jaabar
A brick castle on a promontory in Lake Assad, reached by a causeway.

Qalaat Jaabar stood above the Euphrates for centuries, and when the Tabqa dam filled Lake Assad in the 1970s the water rose around its hill and left the castle on a promontory reached by a causeway. The walls and towers are baked brick over an older core, Zengid and Ayyubid work, with a minaret standing inside from the mosque. The setting - warm brick over blue lake water - is unlike any other castle in Syria.

When to go
March to May and October to November are mild. Summer is hot with glare off the lake. Evening light on the brick is the best of it.
Practical notes
Access and opening depend on local arrangements. Facilities are minimal or absent. The brickwork is fragile in places and climbing on walls is unwise.
