Tresticklan National Park

Tresticklan, a national park since 1996, covers about twenty-nine square kilometres on the Norwegian border, rising to 276 metres at Orshojden, and the landscape is a rift system: long parallel valleys running north to south with lakes in the bottoms and rock ridges between them, so movement across the grain is hard work and movement along it is easy. The forest is pine on thin soil, much of it never logged in the modern sense, with lichen-hung old trees and dead wood. There are no roads inside, no buildings, and only marked trails and a few shelters - the point of the park is that it is one of the few roadless blocks left in southern Sweden. Elk, lynx and wolf occur.

June to September. A full day or overnight.

Before you go

There are no facilities inside - carry water, food and everything else. Trails are rough and cross the ridges. Phone coverage is poor. Mosquitoes are heavy in summer.
