Black River Gorges National Park

Black River Gorges National Park covers the mountainous southwest and protects the largest remaining tract of Mauritius's native forest, on an island otherwise largely given over to sugar cane and resorts. Its gorges, peaks and waterfalls shelter the island's endemic wildlife, including the Mauritius kestrel, the pink pigeon and the echo parakeet, all brought back from the edge of extinction by conservation work. Hiking trails and viewpoints run through the park.

When to go

May to December, the cooler, drier season, for the best hiking conditions and clearest views; the forest and waterfalls are lush after the summer rains but trails can be muddy. Early morning is best for spotting the rare endemic birds and enjoying the viewpoints before any cloud.
