Ulu Temburong National Park

Ulu Temburong National Park, in Brunei's isolated eastern Temburong district, is the country's ecological crown jewel, a pristine expanse of ancient, primary rainforest that has never been logged, part of the vast Heart of Borneo. Thanks to Brunei's oil wealth, which spared its forests from exploitation, it protects some of the most untouched jungle in Southeast Asia, teeming with hornbills, gibbons, insects and extraordinary plant life. Reached by an exhilarating longboat journey up jungle rivers, its highlight is a thrilling canopy walkway that climbs high above the treetops for breathtaking views over the sea of green.

When to go

Year-round; as an equatorial rainforest it is warm, humid and rainy in any season, though drier spells make river travel and the canopy walkway easier and wildlife more active in the cool early morning. Visits are almost always on organised day trips or overnight tours from the capital, including the scenic longboat transfer.

Honest expectations

The park is remote, reached by boat and road transfers, and is visited on organised tours rather than independently, so it takes a full day or overnight and some cost; the canopy walkway involves climbing steep aluminium towers, and rain and leeches come with the rainforest territory. As a chance to experience some of the most pristine, protected primary rainforest in Borneo, with a spectacular canopy walk, though, it is a genuine natural highlight.
