Peradayan Forest Reserve

Peradayan protects a block of forest in Temburong district with a marked trail climbing through it to the summit of Bukit Patoi, a sandstone ridge with rock outcrops near the top and a view over Temburong and into Sarawak beyond. The path is stepped for much of the way and takes around an hour and a half up. A longer route continues to Bukit Peradayan for those who want more.

Background

The reserve covers 2,650 hectares in Mukim Batu Apoi, Temburong District, about 15 kilometres from Bangar town on the road to Labu. Within it, Perdayan Forest Recreation Park takes up 1,070 hectares, where wildlife such as Borneo's native kijang deer is readily seen. The reserve takes in two hills, Bukit Patoi, 310 metres above sea level, and Bukit Peradayan, which rises to 410 metres. A flat patch of stone on the summit of Bukit Patoi serves as a helipad.

When to go

Year round; Brunei has no dry season worth the name. Mornings are cooler for the climb. Heavy rain makes the steps slippery.

Practical notes

The steps are slippery in the wet, which is most of the time. Leeches are present on the trail after rain. Facilities amount to a car park and a shelter.
