Glaskogen Nature Reserve

Glaskogen covers about twenty-eight thousand hectares of forest, lake and bog in western Varmland near the Norwegian border, and it has been set up for self-powered travel: around three hundred kilometres of marked trail, a chain of lakes with portages, some eighty shelters and simple sites, and canoe hire at Lenungshammar. Visitors buy a reserve card which funds the upkeep and covers camping at the marked places. The forest is working forest in parts and older stands in others, with elk, beaver and a wolf pack in the wider district. It is quiet: the reserve is large enough that a few days' paddling can pass with very few encounters.

Things to know

A reserve card is required and should be bought before setting out. Portages mean carrying gear. Mosquitoes are heavy in summer. Shelters are first come and can be occupied.
