Smogen

Smogen sits on an island connected by bridge at the outer edge of the Bohuslan coast, and the Smogenbryggan - a wooden boardwalk running several hundred metres along the harbour front past the old boat sheds - is the whole point of the place. The sheds are now shops, bars and ice cream stands, and the walk fills solidly in July. Behind it the village climbs the pink granite in white houses, and beyond that the rock is bare and rounded, scoured smooth by ice, with bathing places on the seaward side. The fish auction still runs at Smogen and the shellfish landed here is what the west coast is known for.

When to go

June to August, when it is open and alive. Half a day.

Honest expectations

July is extremely crowded and parking is a problem. Prices on the boardwalk are high. Out of season most of it is shut. The bathing rocks are exposed and the water is cold.
