Malingsbo-Kloten covers a large block of forest and water where three counties meet, in the old iron district - the lakes and streams were used to float timber and drive works, and the traces are still there in dams, canals and abandoned sites. What people come for now is the water: a system of lakes connected by short portages that makes several days of canoeing possible without repeating ground, with cabins and shelters at intervals. Beaver work is widespread and easy to find, and elk, lynx and occasionally wolf are present. Cycling and walking trails cross the reserve, and there is fishing under permit on most of the waters.

What you actually see

  • Lakes linked by portages - several days of canoeing.
  • Beaver dams and lodges - widespread through the system.
  • Old ironworking traces - dams, canals, abandoned sites.
  • Cabins and shelters - spaced along the routes.

When to go

May to September for canoeing. A full day to several.

Honest expectations

Portages mean carrying a canoe, sometimes over rough ground. Mosquitoes are heavy in summer. Facilities are dispersed and need planning. Phone coverage is patchy in the interior.

Nearby

Kopparberg is north; Skinnskatteberg is east.
