Saterdalen

The Ljusterån has cut a ravine several kilometres long through the moraine at Sater, forty to fifty metres deep in places with steep wooded sides and a grazed floor - the mix of grazing, moisture and shelter has left it unusually rich in plants and it has been protected since 1970. Paths run along the bottom and the rims with bridges over the stream. At the head is Saterdalens folkpark, one of the oldest in the country, with a dance floor, an open-air stage and a cafe that have been in use since the nineteenth century. Sater itself is a small wooden town with a preserved centre.

May to September. Two to three hours.

Good to know

Paths down and up are steep. Cattle graze the valley floor. The folk park's programme is seasonal and mainly in Swedish. It is a modest site, not a day out on its own.
