The convent was founded around 1080 for Benedictine nuns and ran until the reformation, when it passed into private hands and was rebuilt as a manor, which is what the white house with its stepped gable is now. Parts of the twelfth-century church survive, including the font, and an oak in the grounds is one of the oldest recorded in the country, hollow and propped, estimated at around a thousand years. The gardens are the reason most people come: formal beds, a rose garden, a herb garden and lawns down to the water on both sides, since the property sits on the isthmus between the two halves of Lake Ringsjon.

Things to know

It closes for the winter entirely. The house interior is largely private. Entry is charged for what is mainly a garden visit. Weddings and events restrict access some days.
