Kasikasima

Kasikasima is a granite massif rising out of the forest in southern Suriname, a set of bare domes and towers rising to 718 metres and first mapped in 1904, reached from Palumeu by boat upriver and then a walk and scramble of a couple of days through the forest and up onto the rock. The Trio hold the mountain to be a place of spirits. From the top the forest runs unbroken in every direction with no sign of anything built.

When to go

The dry seasons, February to April and August to November, are the practical windows. Wet rock makes the scramble dangerous. Expeditions run on set dates from Palumeu.

Things to know

This is a hard multi-day trip with river travel, forest walking and exposed scrambling, run only as a guided expedition from Palumeu. Camping is in hammocks with everything carried. Rain can stop the ascent outright.
