Peperpot Nature Park

When the Peperpot plantation stopped working its coffee and cocoa in the twentieth century, the forest moved back in - and the result, ten minutes from downtown Paramaribo, is the capital's favourite wildlife shortcut: old grove lines grown to secondary jungle where three-toed sloths drape the cecropias, squirrel and capuchin monkeys troop the canopy, and the dawn bird list - toucans, trogons, antbirds - fills faster than the coffee cools. Flat walking and cycling paths follow the plantation's old lanes past rusting sheds and the caretaker-era houses, making it the rare rainforest experience that fits before lunch.

When to go

Year round; the first two hours after dawn are worth all the rest combined - sloths and birds both. Rain simply intensifies the green and the frog chorus.

Before you go

It is secondary forest on flat lanes - a gentle, rewarding half day rather than deep wilderness; serious jungle sits further upriver. Mosquito repellent is the entry fee the gate doesn't collect. Guides sharpen sloth-spotting considerably - they hide in plain sight.
