Naqa and Musawwarat

Inland from the Nile, the Kushite kings built sanctuaries in the wadi steppe that UNESCO lists with Meroe as the Island of Meroe: at Naqa, the Lion Temple's pylons carry Apedemak - the Kushite lion god - in reliefs beside a perfectly incongruous Roman-style kiosk, classical columns in the African desert; at Musawwarat es-Sufra, the sprawling Great Enclosure's ramps and courts (elephants carved and, scholars argue, once stabled) surround another Apedemak temple restored to legibility. Gazelles watch from the acacias, the silence is planetary, and the sites' visitors on any given day usually number exactly you.
