Kanneliya is the largest block of lowland rainforest left in Sri Lanka after Sinharaja, and it forms a biosphere reserve with the neighbouring Dediyagala and Nakiyadeniya forests. The trails run to waterfalls and viewpoints through forest thick with lianas, tree ferns and endemic trees, with the Gin and Nilwala rivers rising inside it. It is far less visited than Sinharaja and easier to reach from the south coast.

When to go
January to March and June to September are the drier windows between monsoons. The forest is wet in any month and leeches are constant. Mornings are best for birds.
Honest expectations
Leeches are relentless and socks are essential. Trails are muddy and slippery year round. Facilities at the entrance are basic and guides vary in quality.
