Getting thereNear Ahangama, about 25 km east of Galle
EntryFree tours; tea sold

Handunugoda grows tea at almost sea level, which is unusual in a country where tea means the highlands, and its speciality is virgin white tea: buds cut with golden scissors into a bowl so that no hand touches the leaf, a method revived from an account of how tea was made for the Chinese court. The estate also grows cinnamon, rubber and coconut, and the tour covers the whole holding and the factory, ending with tasting.

What you actually see

  • The virgin white tea - buds cut without being touched, the estate's speciality.
  • The lowland tea - a plantation at almost sea level, unusual in Sri Lanka.
  • The factory - processing shown as part of the tour.
  • The mixed estate - cinnamon, rubber and coconut grown alongside the tea.

When to go

November to April is the season on this coast. Tours run daily through the day. Picking is most visible in the morning.

Honest expectations

The tour is free but the sales pressure at the end is heavy. Virgin white tea is expensive and its distinctiveness is debated. The estate is small compared with the highland plantations.

Nearby

Galle is west, and Koggala lake is nearby.
