Rumassala
A wooded headland across the bay from Galle with a Japanese peace pagoda on top and a legend from the Ramayana.

Rumassala is a wooded hill on the headland between Galle and Unawatuna, and the story attached to it is from the Ramayana: Hanuman was sent to fetch a mountain of healing herbs and, unable to identify the right plants, brought the whole peak, dropping a piece here, which is offered as the reason the hill carries plants not found elsewhere nearby. A Japanese peace pagoda, white and domed, stands on the top with a view over Galle bay.

When to go
November to April is the season on this coast. Mornings are coolest for the climb. Sunset from the pagoda looks back at Galle.
Good to know
The climb up is steep and hot. Jungle Beach below is small and crowded with day trippers and boats. The botanical claim behind the legend is not well established.
