Dowa sits directly beside the Bandarawela to Badulla road, and the thing that catches the eye is a standing Buddha about four metres high cut in relief into the rock face and never completed, the lower part finished and the upper roughed out. Tradition attributes it to King Valagamba in the first century BC, hiding here in exile. Behind it are cave shrines with painted interiors, and a tunnel is said to run from the site, though nobody has traced it.

What you actually see

  • The unfinished Buddha - a four-metre relief cut into the roadside rock and left incomplete.
  • The cave shrines - painted interiors behind the rock face.
  • The murals - Kandyan-period wall painting in the caves.
  • The roadside setting - a temple immediately beside a working highway.

When to go

January to April is the driest in the hill country. Mornings are quietest. The site is open through the day.

Honest expectations

The temple is right on a busy road and traffic noise is constant. The site is small and takes half an hour. Shoes must be removed.

Nearby

Bandarawela is southwest, and Ella is south.
