Illustrative image - a scene in the spirit of the place, not a photograph of it. Real photos are below.
Gaztelugatxe is a steep-sided islet on the Biscay coast, tied to the mainland by a narrow stone causeway and bridge that zigzags across the water. From the bridge a stone stairway climbs the rock in tight switchbacks to a small hermitage at the top, rebuilt several times over the centuries; tradition is to ring the bell there. Entry is now controlled by a free timed ticket booked online, because the site became badly overloaded after appearing on television. The walk in from the road is downhill going out and uphill coming back, which catches a lot of people out. The surrounding coast is layered flysch cliff.
What you actually see
- The zigzag bridge - the stone causeway crossing to the islet.
- The stairway - switchback steps climbing the rock to the top.
- The hermitage bell - the tiny chapel at the summit and the custom of ringing it.
- The Biscay coast - layered flysch cliffs running east toward Bermeo.
When to go
Spring and early autumn avoid the worst crowding and the August heat on the steps. Book the free ticket as soon as dates open, because summer slots go fast. The earliest slots are the coolest and quietest. Storms close the bridge outright and the site shuts for maintenance periods, so check before travelling.
Honest expectations
It is a hard walk in both directions, steep and stepped, with no shortcut and no shuttle to the bridge. The ticket system is strict and unbooked arrivals are turned back. The hermitage itself is plain and very small. In summer the stairway becomes a slow queue, and wind and spray make the steps slippery.
Nearby
Bakio and Bermeo along the coast; Bilbao is under an hour inland.
