Oreung Royal Tombs

Oreung is a walled enclosure south-west of central Gyeongju holding five grass mounds among old pines. Tradition assigns them to Bak Hyeokgeose, the founding king of Silla, his queen, and three later rulers of the Bak line, which would make this the oldest royal burial ground in the city; the attribution rests on later records rather than excavation, and the tombs have not been opened. Alongside the mounds are a shrine hall where rites are still performed, a memorial stele pavilion, and Alyeongjeong, a well associated with the queen's birth legend. What distinguishes the site from Daereungwon in the centre is simply quiet: it is a short ride out, ticketed, and usually near empty, so the pines and the mounds can be walked without a crowd. The lotus pond by the entrance flowers in summer. It takes an hour and is the calmest of Gyeongju's tomb sites.

The mounds are unexcavated and closed - there is nothing to enter and little interpretation. The royal attributions are traditional, not proven. Ticketed for what is essentially a walk in a grove.
