Camellia Hill was planted from 1981 on about twenty hectares of Jeju's south-west and holds several hundred varieties from dozens of countries, including some very old trees moved here and specimens that grow considerably taller than the shrubs most people picture. Its value is seasonal: camellias flower from late autumn through winter into early spring, which is exactly when Jeju's other gardens are dormant, so this is one of the few places on the island with substantial colour in January. Fallen blossoms are raked into hearts and patterns on the paths, which is unashamedly for photographs and is what fills Korean social feeds each winter. Beyond the camellias there are hydrangeas in June, a wildflower area, a small gallery and a cafe. Paths are gentle and the whole loop is easy. Outside the flowering season it is a pleasant but ordinary arboretum, and the ticket is harder to justify.

What you actually see

  • The camellia collection - several hundred varieties, some very old trees.
  • The winter flowering - colour from late autumn into early spring.
  • The arranged fallen blossom - raked into shapes on the paths.
  • The June hydrangeas - the second season here.

When to go

November to March is the whole point; late December to February is the peak. June for hydrangeas. Mornings before the tour coaches.

Honest expectations

Ticketed, and outside the flowering months there is not much to see for the price. The blossom arrangements are staged for photographs, not natural. Busy at weekends in peak season.

Nearby

Sanbangsan, Yongmeori coast and the Jusangjeolli cliffs are in the south-west.
