Pilgrim's Rest

Alluvial gold was found in this valley in 1873 and a rush followed - diggers worked the creek by hand, a tent camp became a village, and by the 1880s a company had taken over the deeper mining. What makes it unusual is the ending: the mine closed in 1972, the state bought the entire village in 1974 and declared it a national monument, and it has been run as a museum town since, with the corrugated-iron and timber buildings kept in their period form. Uptown and Downtown are the two halves; the Royal Hotel, the printing museum, the diggings site and the miner's house are the set pieces, and gold panning is demonstrated on the creek. It is genuinely a preserved place rather than a reconstruction, though upkeep has been uneven and some buildings have stood empty. The road in from the Panorama Route is a steep descent.

When to go

April to September. Half a day. Weekdays are quiet; the village empties in the afternoon.

Honest expectations

Maintenance has been patchy and some buildings are shut or shabby. Museums keep short hours and several close for lunch. It can feel like a tourist stop rather than a living village, because that is what it is. Winter mornings in the valley are cold.
